19th Century Engraving after
Elisabeth-Louise Vigee LeBrun

Engraving by W. Unger after Vigee LeBrun's famous self portrait. Printed by the Verlag von V.A. Heck in Vienna circa 1890.

This beautiful engraving in sepia tones is a detail after the artist's 1790 Self Portrait painted in Florence which today hangs in the Uffizi Gallery.

Élisabeth-Louise Vigée-Le Brun (1755 -1842) became one of the most famous women painters of the 18th Century. The daughter of a painter, she trained with Jean-Baptiste Greuze, Joseph Vernet and other great painters of the period. Her work came to the attention of Queen Marie Antoinette, and during the 1770s and 80s she was commissioned to paint members of the royal household. At the time of the French revolution, Vigee-LeBrun fled France and traveled across Europe living in Italy, Austria and Russia. In 1807 she traveled to Switzerland and was made an honorary member of the Société pour l'Avancement des Beaux-Arts of Geneva.
