Outstanding 17th Century Copperplate Burin Engraving of Thomas Aquinas by the French engraver Leonard Gaultier.

 

Engraved on beautiful old laid paper.

 

Thomas Aquinas, Thomas of Aquin, or Aquino(c. 1225 – 7 March 1274) was an Italian Catholic priest, philosopher and theologian. Many consider him one of the greatest of the Catholic theologians.

 

He is shown with a shining sun on his breast, a typical iconographic attribute for Aquinas, which symbolizes his role as a teacher of doctrine.

 


Leonard Gaultier (1561-1641)
An engraver of the French School, Gaultier was originally from Germany but came to Paris at a young age. During his long career, he became a favored engraver of royalty and nobility across Europe.
