A Venetian Nobleman

Striking late 17th Century copperplate print from a volume of 101 costume plates created by the Dutch artist Caspar Luyken (1672-1708).

Luyken (also spelled Luiken) collaborated with the German publisher Christoph Weigel on a number of books including the Neu-eröffnete Welt-Galleria which was published circa 1700 in Nurenberg.

The Welt Galleria (World Gallery) depicted a wide range of social classes: royalty, courtesans, merchants, laborers, military officers and soldiers, ladies, gentlemen, and the costumes of many different regions and ethnic groups.

Copperplate engraving on beautiful old chainlinked paper.
