A Litter of Foxes

Three well known artists contributed to the production of this 18th Century hand colored mezzotint engraving of a litter of foxes.

 

The work was engraved by Joseph Grozer after a painting created by both Charles Loraine Smith and George Morland.

 

The annotation at the bottom reads: "Animals by C. Loraine Smith, Esq, Landscape by G. Morland."

 

George Morland

 

(1763-1804)

 

The popular and quintessentially British artist George Morland lead a life and career which was as prolific as it was profligate. Despite his great success, his life of excess lead him into dept and he died at the early age of 41, probably as a result of alcoholism.

 

The highpoint of Morland's career was between 1790 and 1795 when he achieved great fame and popularity as a painter of animals and rural scenes.

 

Dimensions: 26 x 20.5 inches

 

Condition: Age toning and spotting as shown. The sheet has been reinforced around the edges with a one inch thick band of masking tape applied to the back. A few water spots visible primarily on the reverse.
