Bavarian Crossbow Shooting Target

Large and beautifully handpainted target for a "Festschiessen" or shooting competition which has been converted into an award for the winner.

 

A hunter in medieval dress holds a crossbow and blows a horn. Crossbow competitions are a traditional sport in Bavaria and the annual Octoberfest even has a special tent dedicated to them.

Oil on heavy board.

The dedication on the board indicates that it was presided over by Herr Mayor Neumaier and the winner was Carl Koenig. The runners up are also indicated on the sides of the circle. The board is dated May 28, 1911.
