Ernst Georg Rüegg

 

(Milan 1883 - Mannedorf 1948)

 

Ernst Georg Ruegg was born in Milan as th oldest son of a silk industry entrepreneur, and was expected to follow in his father's footsteps.

 

But following his father's death, Ruegg went to Zurich to study art, and later continued his studies at the Dresden academy of art. Later he ran a studio at Hermann Gattiker's Kunstschule für Damen (School of Art for Women). He wandered through the Swiss countryside, writing poems and painting, and fell in love with a Swiss peasant girl, leading to a split with his family. In 1916, the year when this work was painted, Ruegg beban to tach at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich. He became known for his landscapes and interiors that reflected Swiss life.
