Victor Brauner was a Romanian Jewish painter who became one of the most important figures in the surrealist movement.

Brauner moved to Paris 1930 and became a friend of fellow Romanian Constantin Brancusi. Another friend, Yves Tanguy, introduced him to Andre Breton and the Surrealists by 1933.

During WWII, Brauner fled Paris and lived and worked in secret in the South of France and then in Switzerland. His work was featured at the Venice Biennial in 1954 and 1966.

Brauner is buried in the Montmartre cemetary where his gravestone reads: "Peindre, c'est la vie, la vraie vie, ma vie" (Painting is life, real life, my life.")
