Annotation indicating that the sitter was
82 years old at the time the
painting was executed.

Attributed to Benezit-Listed Artist Johann Jakob Tanner

Johann Jakob Tanner (der Ältere - "the Elder") was born in
1766 in Richterswil Switzerland and died in 1822 in Herisau. He was a portait and genre painter and part of a family of Swiss 18th and 19th Century artists which included Rudolf Tanner and Johann Jakob Tanner the Younger.

This painting is attributed to Tanner, but there is no signature. There is an indication on the back -- probably written by a collector at a later date - that the painting was executed by Tanner in 1798. (Tanner Fecit 1798)

Medium: Watecolor on Paper

Dimensions: 8.5 X 10 inches

Condition: Paper is quite fragile and lightly damaged in a few spots. As can be seen in the photo, the upper right corner is damaged and there are a few pinhole sized holes at the edges of the paper. There is a band of discoloration along the very bottom, and some other light stains on the paper. The overall impression of the image is very attractive and stong. Nice tones of blue!
