Franz Heckendorf was born in Berlin and studied at the Berlin Kunstgewerbemuseum and the Akademie.

 

Beginning in 1909, he exhibited as par of the Berliner  Szession.

 

As a fighter pilot curing WWI, he was impressed by the landscapes of the Balkans, Turkey and the Middle East.

 

He developed an expressionist style, working in a vareity of mediums including pastel, oil, watercolor and print making. After the Nazis came to power, Heckendorf's work was classified as "Entartete" or degenerate.
