Son of a Dutchman from Utrecht and a Swiss woman from the Canton de Vaud, Alfred van Muyden studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He was a co-founder of the Société des peintres et sculpteurs suisses.

 

Van Muyden lived and worked for a number of years in Italy, where this drawing was done. A watercolor with a similar theme dates 1840 and is believed to have been excecuted in Albano.
