Jean Chevolleau grew up in Fontenay-le-Comte in the Vendée, a region characterized by waterways and marshlands.

He studied at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts at the studio of Jean Souverbie.

 

Chevolleau was a friend of Jacques Villon, and through Villon came to know and associate with many of the well known painters of his time including Kupka, Léger, Picabia, André Lhote and Manessier. This group of artists became known as the “Groupe de Puteaux.”

Chevolleau's beautiful country home in the Vendee countryside is today an artist's residence.
