Jean Lurcat

(1892 - 1966)

Black Rooster

Original Lithograph, Signed in Pencil by the Artist Lower Right

The French artist Jean Lurcat was close to many of the great artistic geniuses of the early 20th century. He counted among his friends, Matisse, Renoir and Cezanne, as well as the poet Rainer Maria Rilke. He worked in multiple media, including print making, but is best known for revitalizing tapestry as an art form in France.

TSR has wonderful archival footage of Jean Lurcat in 1963 a few years before his death talking about "La Grande Menace" a tapestry he created on the theme of the threat of atomic war.
