Southern European Village

The Austrian artist Anton Konrad Schmidt (1887-1974) studied at Vienna's Akademie der Bildenden Künste (Academy of Fine Arts).

His work became very popular, and even the Kaiser purcahsed a painting. Awared the Honors of the City of Vienna, Schmidt's works were purchased by the Albertina and other major collections. He traveled extensively throughout Europe.

This watercolor shows a colorful sunny village scene somewhere in southern Europe. Women and children have gathered in the streets. This may be southern Italy sometime just after WWII. Schmidt traveled a good deal during that period.
