Le Christ Mort

Christ at the Foot of the Cross

Moving large format oil on canvas in an expressionist style shows the body of Christ after he was lowered from the cross. Iconographically the piece is unusual since it shows Jesus alone, without mourners. It is neither a "deposition" (descent from the cross) nor a Pieta (mourning of Christ).

The position of the hands and head is extraordinarily expressive. A striking image which shows the human dimension of the suffering of Christ, in an existential, expressionst style typical of the early 20th Century.

Signed by the artist lower left.

Dimensions: 55 X 74 cm (not including frame)
