Extraordinary detail and luminosity in this pair of large late 19th Century watercolors of a Swiss peasant farmer in his working blues and his wife at the spinning wheel.

Ernst Breitenstein (1857 Binningen 1929 Binningen) was a painter of portaits, and genre scenes who worked closely with Ernst Stückelberg.

 

Both pieces are signed and dated 1890.

Ernst Breitenstein is listed in the Benezit and other major art dictionaries.
